Super Bowl: The most important facts and information about the US sporting event (1)

1. What is the Super Bowl?

It is the final of the 32-team National Football League (NFL) and at the same time the largest sporting event in the USA. The winners of the two conferences (AFC and NFC) are dueling. The broadcast is the highest-rated television event in the United States. More than 115 million viewers are expected to watch the Super Bowl on television on Sunday, and the NFL is expecting over a billion viewers worldwide. This also drives up advertising prices; a 30-second spot costs $7 million this year. The National Chicken Council, the umbrella organization of American chicken breeders, expects that 1.45 billion chicken wings will be eaten in the USA over the Super Bowl weekend.

2. Who will play for Super Bowl LVIII?

The San Francisco 49ers are playing against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs won the title in 2020 and 2023. They also made it to the Super Bowl in 2021, but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The two teams met in the Super Bowl in 2020, with Kansas City winning 31:20. The San Francisco 49ers last won the title almost two decades ago, when they triumphed over the San Diego Chargers in 1995.

By the way, the term “Super Bowl” was invented by the former owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Hunt. His daughter owned a game called “Super Ball.” Because the final games in the university league have been called “bowl games” since the 1920s, Hunt created the pun “Super Bowl”. The NFL final has been called that since 1969.

3. What happens around the game?

The Super Bowl is a huge circus, and the football entourage shuts down Las Vegas for a whole week. In the city known as “Sin City,” numerous Super Bowl parties take place in bars, clubs and casinos, where stars like 50 Cent and David Guetta perform. As usual, so-called tailgating, celebrating and barbecuing in the stadium parking lot, is not permitted at the Super Bowl. Instead, there are concerts and other attractions around the stadium. Rock singer Gwen Stefani, among others, will perform there.

The halftime show is legendary. Being able to perform is an honor for the music stars. This year, R&B singer Usher is hosting the show and will probably bring some surprise guests. Usher previously appeared in the halftime show as a guest with the Black Eyed Peas in 2011. This year the national anthem will be sung by country star Reba McEntire.

4. Who are the quarterbacks?

Patrick Mahomes (left) is playing in his fourth Super Bowl, Brock Purdy from the 49ers is in the grand final for the first time.

In the summer of 2020, Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, had himself gold plated. A few months after leading his team to victory in the Super Bowl, Mahomes signed the most lucrative contract in sports history. The Chiefs tied Mahomes to them long-term and the currently 28-year-old will earn more than $450 million between 2020 and 2031. Mahomes is a modern-day megastar. The sporting success is there, four Super Bowl appearances in five seasons are a record. In addition, no jersey is sold more often in NFL fan shops than Mahomes' number 15 jersey.

Unlike Mahomes, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was not trusted to lead the team to the Super Bowl. Experts didn't even expect Purdy to ever become a starter. The 24-year-old was drafted last in the 2022 draft and was given the unflattering title of “Mr Irrelevant”.Purdy was selected by the San Francisco 49ers just for that reason, because there were no outstanding quarterbacks in that draft year.

As expected, Purdy started last season, his first as a professional, as the third quarterback. Then bad luck with injuries struck the San Francisco 49ers: both the regular quarterback and his replacement were injured. Suddenly only Purdy remained. Many fans and pundits wrote off the season; Nobody believed that San Francisco would win a single game with this “Mister Irrelevant”. But Purdy seized the opportunity and led the 49ers into the play-offs in 2023. This year he was the undisputed starter and led his team to the Super Bowl.

Young versus old: Kyle Shanahan (left) and Andy Reid meet in the Super Bowl for the second time after 2020.

Kyle Shanahan, 44 years old, is a representative of the young generation of coaches who have shaped the NFL in recent years with offensive spectacle. Shanahan is considered a clever tactician in the scene, whose creative and versatile attacking moves are difficult to calculate. Shanahan has been the 49ers' coach since 2017 and coached them in the 2020 Super Bowl. He also reached the grand final in 2016 as an assistant coach of the Atlanta Falcons when Atlanta lost to the New England Patriots.

An old-school coach is Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs. The 65-year-old has been a head coach in the NFL since 1999. Until 2020, he had the image of a nice loser: in more than 20 years, a team coached by Reid only made it to the Super Bowl once - and lost. Reid said in 2019 that he would sacrifice a pinky toe for a Super Bowl title.

6. Who else should you watch out for?

Tight end Travis Kelce is Patrick Mahomes' preferred starting point for the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs. However, Kelce came into the spotlight not only because of his sporting achievements, but also because of his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Swift attended eleven of her partner's games this season and managed to make the billion-dollar NFL business even bigger.

The TV camera kept zooming in on the singer, and thanks to Swift, people who had previously had little interest in the sport were suddenly watching football. The TV station NBC recorded a 52 percent increase in girls between the ages of 12 and 17. In the last few days, half of the United States has been wondering whether Swift will be in the stadium for the Super Bowl. She plays a concert in Tokyo the night before. However, the Japanese embassy intervened and wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that thanks to the time difference, Swift would easily make it to the big game.

Christian McCaffrey is one of the key players at San Francisco. The running back gained the most space in the NFL with running plays this season. McCaffrey has never won the Super Bowl. His father Ed, on the other hand, has won the title three times. Among other things, Ed McCaffrey triumphed 30 years ago – with the San Francisco 49ers.

7. Where does the game take place?

The Super Bowl is being hosted at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for the first time. The arena in the casino metropolis in the state of Nevada opened in January 2020 and has 65,000 seats and a lockable roof.

The stadium cost almost $2 billion to build. It was partly financed by the public sector. This fact is responsible for the fact that there is even an NFL team in Las Vegas. Until four years ago, the Las Vegas Raiders played in Oakland, California. Because the local government refused to use taxpayer money to renovate the dilapidated stadium, the team moved to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has developed a reputation as a diverse sports city in recent years. While boxing matches used to take place in casino arenas, there has been an NHL team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, since 2017. In November 2023, Formula 1 also returned to “Sin City” after over 40 years.

8. How can I watch the Super Bowl in Switzerland?

The German TV channel RTL is broadcasting the Super Bowl live, and the game can also be followed online on the sports streaming service DAZN, but this offer is subject to a fee. The game begins on Monday night at 0:30 a.m. (CET).

9. What do players get if they win?

The winning team receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The trophy is named after the legendary former Green Bay Packers coach who won the first two Super Bowls. The NFL also pays each winning player $150,000. There is also a ring from the club. Each ring costs $5,000. The players on the losing team still receive $75,000 each.

10. What rules do you need to know to understand the game?

There are eleven players on the pitch per team. The most important player is the quarterback. Before an offensive play, he receives the ball from the center and in most cases initiates the play.

A team has four attempts to gain 10 yards of space. If the space is gained, the team gets four more attempts to cover another 10 yards.

Football is about points. These can be obtained in different ways:

Touchdown
If the ball is carried into the opponent's end zone or caught there, six points are scored.

Extra points
If a player kicks the ball through the bars behind the end zone after a touchdown, the team receives another point (“extra point”). Alternatively, the team can try to get into the end zone again from a short distance, in which case they get two additional points (“conversion”). Most of the time, the teams opt for the “extra point”.

Field-Goal
If the ball is kicked through the bars regardless of a touchdown, three points result.

Safety
If the opponent has possession of the ball and is brought down in their own end zone, two points are awarded. A safety is rather rare.

Super Bowl: The Kansas City Chiefs have created a new dynasty - their dominance also makes them an enemy. When the Chiefs replaced the New England Patriots as the defining NFL team, the team received a lot of sympathy. Now they are in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years. Your omnipresence is tiring.

Super Bowl: Major sports leagues avoided “Sin City” for decades – Las Vegas has nevertheless become a sports stronghold. A few years ago, apart from boxing matches in the casinos, Las Vegas was a sporting no-man’s land. Now the city wants to use sport to polish up its image – for example with the Super Bowl.

Commentary Quarterback Patrick Mahomes signs the most lucrative contract in sports history: Yes, an athlete can be worth $500 million. There is something surreal about the fact that the talent of being able to throw oddly shaped balls precisely across a field of grass can generate a salary of $50 million a year can. But the Kansas City Chiefs will not regret signing their shining light Patrick Mahomes.
