Why is it called “Super Bowl”?

The daily newspaper “The Christian Science Monitor” investigated the question of the name of the championship game. The term therefore goes back to a children's toy. The owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Hunt, is said to have coined it in 1966. The so-called Super Ball was a popular toy in the USA in the 1960s.

Hunt's children were also said to have loved the ball, and so he suggested at a meeting that the finale of the football season should simply be called the Super Bowl. Final games in college football have already been referred to as so-called bowl games. Proposals to rename the Championship final the “Ultimate Bowl” or “Premier Bowl” failed to gain traction.
