My husband absolutely loves Chinese tomato soup. When we eat or order at a Chinese restaurant, my husband orders the standard Chinese tomato soup. Of course I quickly started looking for ways to make it myself and that's how I came up with this recipe. This soup differs from the 'Dutch variant' because it is a bit sweeter and is filled with chicken and egg noodles.

Make your own Chinese tomato soup

My husband loves Chinese tomato soup and orders this as standard when we order Chinese. Well, if he loves it so much, I naturally want to make it myself. Just see if I can do it too. Or maybe make it just that little bit tastier.

I use in this recipeno parcels and bagsso that the soup does not contain unnecessary salts and sugars to increase its shelf life.

I have now made this recipe many times and continue to improve it. The recipe is even famous in my family and I regularly receive requests to make this Chinese Tomato Soup.

I think it's ideal to have a nice pan of soup ready when my husband and I have both been working.

This Chinese Tomato Soup is delicious the day you make it, but even more divine once it has rested overnight.

So it is an idealmeal prep recipe, which you can prepare a day in advance.

You can store this soup in the refrigerator for a few days. Freezing is also no problem. You can then keep it in the freezer for about 3 months.

Recipe: Chinese Tomato Soup

This recipe is for one large soup pot of Chinese tomato soup. For approximately 6 people.

  • 1 liter water
  • 1 liter sieved tomatoes
  • 300 grams of chicken fillet, cut into pieces
  • 2 chicken stock cubes
  • 1 ui
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 can of tomato puree (70 grams)
  • 6 tablespoons of sugar
  • 4 tablespoons ketjap manis
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon djahé (ginger powder)
  • 1 teaspoon sereh (lemongrass)
  • 2 tablespoons of bread
  • 1 teaspoon sambal
  • 1 handful of egg noodles (mihoen or noodles are also possible)

Preparation method

  1. Chop the onion and cut the garlic into small pieces.
  2. Take a large (soup) pan and put some oil in it. Add the onion and fry until translucent.
  3. Add the chicken fillet and fry until the chicken is done.
  4. Then add the garlic and tomato puree. Stir it well. Extinguish by adding a liter of water.
  5. Add the stock cubes and bring to the boil. Let it simmer on low heat for about an hour.
  6. Remove the chicken from the pan and keep it aside.
  7. Add one liter of strained tomatoes to the pan and bring to the boil.
  8. In a separate bowl, make a mixture of the sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, djahé, lemongrass and sambal. Stir the mixture well. Add this mixture to the pan of soup. Stir well.
  9. In another separate bowl, make a mixture of the cornstarch with a little water. Stir this well until it is a smooth emulsion. Add it to the soup and keep stirring well. This is to prevent (white) lumps from appearing in your soup. You don't want that. 😉
  10. Add the handful of egg noodles and let it simmer over low heat. Stir regularly to prevent the noodles from sticking to the bottom or burning.
  11. Add the chicken fillet back to the pan of soup. Your soup is now ready!
